OceanTools has recently supplied the first order of 20 each specialised cameras and lights designed and built to bespoke specifications for use by Alaskan pollock fishing vessels. The cameras supplied are based on the OceanTools C5 camera fitted with non-standard IP Control and an inbuilt video switch. The lights, based on the L5 versatile underwater LED lamp, are also controlled by internet protocol. The design team at OceanTools incorporated complex electronics within the camera to enable control of the inbuilt video switch.

Trawlers experience particularly hard conditions and equipment must be extremely durable. The cameras and lights are to be included in systems which enable trawlers to control the ‘bycatch’ of Chinook Salmon in pollock nets. Trawlers can face significant fines and even the closing of their fishery by the National Marine Fisheries Service (NOAA Fisheries) if the bycatch is too high. Underwater camera technology is now used to take the guesswork out of what is going on inside the nets.

When bycatch species are detected in the net, the trawler can slow its movement to allow the stronger swimming salmon to escape while the pollock ’herd’ together at the end of the net, or flaps can be opened in the net to release the non-target fish.
